It may be that France and Germany rear their males on for meat? Unlike the UK the meat birds here are reared to at least 12 weeks. In the case of our neighbour it is 14-16 weeks as he has 4 barns each with free-ranging pastures, so the barns are emptied one at a time (perhaps 500 in each) over 2 weeks and processed at a very small abattoir a few miles away. In the UK meat birds are a fast growing breed, kept inside and slaughtered at 5 ½ weeks. Chicken here is very expensive (€12/Kg). I doubt the UK market would accept the price or the difference in texture/ flavour.
