Yes, that is totally unfathomable! - unless, maybe, trying to hide the treasure horde of nuts? To a mouse a screw like that must be like picking up a length of railway track in your teeth!

They can be eliminated. This "mighty Mouse" met it's demise in a Fenn Mark4

When we lived in Yorkshire the cats used to bring in live wood mice and let them go in the kitchen. Some times OH could catch them in a jam jar and take them outside but sometimes not. We bought one of those see-through box mousetraps but never caught anything.
